Why Projects>Certs Almost Always
Why I’m Building From Dust to Zenith (And Why It Matters)
I’m a first-year BMS student at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata.
That’s not impressive. That’s the baseline.
What should be impressive is what I’m doing outside the classroom.
The Problem With Building a Portfolio
Everyone says the same thing: “Get certifications. Stack your resume. Do online courses.”
So I did. HubSpot certifications. Google courses. Anthropic Academy. The whole stack.
You know what I realized? Certifications don’t prove anything.
They prove you can watch videos and pass a test. That’s it. Every other person applying for the same internship has the same certificates.
What they don’t have is shipped work.
The Execution Gap
I looked around at my peers. Saw what actually got them interviews.
It wasn’t certifications. It was projects. Real, tangible, documented results. People who built something, launched it, measured it, and wrote about it.
That’s what companies actually care about.
So I stopped collecting certificates and started building.
What I’m Building
From Dust to Zenith is a collection of business turnaround stories.
Companies with near-death experiences and their own story of comebacks.
Apple, Netflix, LEGO, Ford, Marvel, Nintendo, Starbucks, IBM, Burberry, Domino’s, and many more
Each case study breaks down:
What went wrong (the crisis)
Why it happened (root cause)
How they fixed it (the strategy)
What you can actually learn from it
It’s not a listicle. It’s not generic business advice. It’s detailed, researched, and built to actually teach something.
Why This Matters for Internship Applications
I will be applying as a Growth Marketing, Product Marketing, and Marketing Analyst intern at Series A–C startups.
Here’s what I’m bringing:
1. A shipped product. Not a demo. Not a mockup. A live website with real articles, SEO implementation, GA4 tracking, and structured data.
2. Execution proof. I’m running a Google Ads campaign on this site and documenting the results. Impressions, clicks, conversions, cost per acquisition. Real numbers.
3. A narrative. Not “I have certifications.” It’s “I built this, ran ads on it, measured the results, and here’s what I learned.”
That’s a story companies can relate to.
The Bigger Picture
Most students chase credentials. I’m chasing execution.
Credentials are easy. You sign up, you study, you pass. Thousands of people do it every year.
Execution is hard. You have to build something, ship it, measure it, and be okay with it being imperfect.
Most people quit there. They don’t like being exposed. They don’t like uncertainty.
I do. Because that’s where the learning actually happens.
What’s Next
The site is live. The case studies are published. The Ads campaign is ready.
By October, I’ll have real data: traffic, conversions, cost per lead, ROI, ROAS, CPC and almost all the metrics I need for my documentation.
That’s my internship application story.
Not “I have X certifications.”
It’s “I built a product, I marketed it, here’s what happened.”
